Arapaima gigas — Paiche / Pirarucu
One of the largest freshwater fish on the planet, paiche can grow over 10 feet long and weigh more than 400 pounds. Native to the Amazon Basin, this air-breathing 'living fossil' is known for its armored scales and long lifespan.
Cichla spp.
A powerful and aggressive Amazon sport fish, peacock bass are famous for their explosive strikes and hard-fighting nature. Native to the Amazon Basin, they thrive in rivers, lakes, and flooded forests, and are prized for their strength, vivid colors, and acrobatic fights.
Potamotrygon spp.
Hidden in the sandy bottoms of the Amazon's rivers and channels, freshwater stingrays are unmistakable for their broad, mottled discs and whip-like tails tipped with a venomous barb. Hooking one is a true test of strength — they pull flat and hard against the current — and landing a big disc is one of the most memorable catches in the region. Always handled and released with care.
Pygocentrus & Serrasalmus spp.
Native to the Amazon Basin, piranhas come in a variety of species — red-bellied, black, and silver forms among them — each varying in size and behavior. Found throughout rivers, lakes, and flooded forests around the Iquitos region, they're known for their sharp teeth and powerful bite, offering fast-paced action and an exciting fishing experience.
Pseudoplatystoma & Brachyplatystoma spp.
Iconic residents of the Peruvian Amazon, these large catfish are known for their size, strength, and powerful runs. Found in the rivers and deep channels around the Iquitos region, they're prized by anglers for their endurance, challenging fights, and impressive variety of species.
Colossoma macropomum — Tambaqui / Gamitana
One of the Amazon's largest scaled fish, the tambaqui (gamitana) can top 90 pounds. A deep-bodied, hard-pulling fighter, it roams the flooded forest crushing seeds and nuts with powerful jaws. Its size and strength make landing one a real battle — and one of the most prized catches in the region.
Book Your Trip
The Amazon basin near Iquitos holds some of the most productive freshwater fishing on the planet. Our guided sport fishing tours take you across rivers, oxbow lakes, and tributaries where peacock bass, piranha, pacu, and the massive arapaima all swim within casting distance — and whether you're a lifelong angler or picking up a rod for the first time, our guides put you on water most anglers never see.
The waters around our lodge and across the greater Iquitos region draw anglers from around the world. Peacock bass are the prize — aggressive and known for explosive strikes; piranha fishing is a guest favorite; pacu put up a strong fight; and the arapaima (locally, paiche) is one of the largest freshwater fish on earth, growing over two meters. Every tour is 100% catch and release, and your guide briefs you on proper handling so the fish — and these waters — stay world-class.
We fish different waters by season, water level, and target species: the Yanayacu River near the lodge, tributaries off the Amazon, remote oxbow lakes, and flooded forest that opens up at high water. Our guides grew up fishing here and know where each species feeds through the year — and you're never fishing from a dock, but out in a boat on rivers and lakes that feel untouched. Fishing is good year-round, but the low-water months of June through November are the best of the year — as the rivers drop, the fish concentrate and the bite turns on.
We supply fishing equipment matched to your target species — rods, reels, tackle, bait, and lures are all included, though experienced anglers are welcome to bring their own setup. Your guide handles navigation, rigging, and spotting, so you can focus on the fishing.
Many guests pair sport fishing with other activities. Chase peacock bass in the morning, then head out for a birding excursion in the afternoon, or add a night of jungle camping between fishing days. Prefer to fish every day? We'll build the itinerary around your priorities. Tours run from 1 to 7 days with daily departures and flexible scheduling, and custom trips can extend up to 14 days.
